Established in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to book john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired third-level domain names remained functional.
